I was so excited to read Betty Cayouette’s debut novel One Last Shot. This book is magical! Childhood sweethearts supermodel Emerson and photographer Theo who were torn apart are jolted out of their daily routines by calendar reminders on their phones of a marriage pact. Cayouette whisks the reader away to Cinque Terre, Italy where they navigate an opportunity to rekindle their love. The individual characters are so beautifully flawed that you willingly hop on their will-they-won’t-they rollercoaster cheering for a happy ending.
Be sure not to skip the Author’s Note. As a sexual assault survivor and a former Victim Rights Law Center client, Cayouette provides authentic insight into the impact sexual violence has on the individual and on a survivor’s friends and families. Cayouette writes, “I hope that reading this book and seeing the wonderful lives of characters who have been impacted by sexual assault makes readers who have experienced any type of sexual harassment or violence feel seen and optimistic. Because while sexual violence did change my story, it was ultimately just a chapter.”
I really felt that in my heart, and you will too.
