VRLC Statement – Dobbs Decision

Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC) fervently opposes the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. We know from serving sexual assault survivors that the right to bodily autonomy is fundamental and many other rights, including the rights to seek justice and access healthcare following a sexual assault, are built upon it. The systemic stripping away of a pregnant person’s right to choose what happens to their body jeopardizes these rights and puts survivors across the country at great risk of serious harm.

Sexual assault disproportionately affects communities of color, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals. Health and economic disparities also disproportionately affect these communities. The Dobbs decision demonstrates blatant disregard for those who will be most significantly harmed by its effects.

Half of the states are poised to eliminate protections for pregnant individuals. Further erosion of fundamental constitutional rights looms on the horizon. Survivors’ access to justice after their sexual assaults and their safety when they attend school, live in community, and work are also jeopardized by today’s decision. This cannot be the end of the story. Indeed, it will not be the end of the story.

With grief and anger, we renew our commitment to fight with survivors of sexual assault, including when the assault results in a pregnancy. We will continue to assert the fundamental right of bodily autonomy through our work. We will assert these truths with our like-minded colleagues and friends around the world. Please join us.

For all of us impacted by sexual violence, today’s decision is especially difficult. VRLC stands in solidarity with those who will work to change it.
