Webinar: Intersectional Lawyering

Survivor-Led Representation in the Face of Oppression

Webinar: March 26, 10-11:30am Pacific/1-2:30pm Eastern
Share & Learn Discussion Session: March 27, 10-11:30am Pacific/1-2pm Eastern

This webinar and companion discussion session for attorneys will explore the ways in which intersecting systems of oppression (e.g., racism/white supremacy, heterosexism, ableism, sexism, classism, and anti-immigrant bias) increase vulnerability to sexual violence, create barriers to accessing legal services, and are routinely used to undermine the credibility of survivors of sexual violence during legal proceedings. Using an intersectional lens, the webinar will explore the concepts of ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized oppression and provide a framework for identifying and mitigating their impact in the survivor’s case. From the initial intake to presenting a survivor’s claims for relief, participants will learn and practice strategies to lawyer in ways that center survivors, challenge institutional bias, and resist rape culture.

The day after the webinar, attendees will have the opportunity to meet virtually with the presenters and fellow attorneys for a discussion-based Share & Learn Session. This informal setting is meant to provide space to dig deeper into concepts presented during the webinar, to share individual and organizational successes, and to discuss ongoing challenges in their work representing sexual assault survivors experiencing multiple forms of oppression.

Note: This webinar is for attorneys at organizations and agencies that receive — or are eligible to receive — funding through the Office on Violence Against Women.
